Hello Everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to update you on what's been happening in the studio. We've recorded 7 songs in the last 3 days.

  1. Dragon Master
  2. Nothing
  3. Clothes On Fire
  4. Just The Way She Is
  5. Rat Race
  6. What If?
  7. (Funky 15) tentative title

Each song has its own unique drum set up, different drums, different microphones etc. Engineer co-producer Joe Barresi is doing an amazing job painting the audio picture. We are tracking to analog tape and that familiar character of classic recordings from the 60's and 70's is there doing its thing!

The record is taking shape already. There is a lot of diversity in style and texture from song to song. One song in particular will be quite a deviation from my previous work. It best represents what I have learned during this last decade of playing my father's music. I've fused many of my musical interests into this one song which at the moment is called Funky 15. It's  an instrumental that has a repeating rhythmic figure in the unusual time signature of 15/8.

Because of the abnormailty of the phrase the drum groove turns around a lot during the song. It's a nail biting toe tapper!

The melody is also quite different from my previous work. It's constructed to have a 2 voice cluster filled brass melody and a string quartet counter melody. I'm excited to be able to record a real string quartet and have Scheila and Ben play the brass. The song is the fusion of progressive rock , jazz and modern classical and it lays the foundation for some other melodic guitar adventures of my own. There is a hypnotic bass line during the solo section that has shift between major and minor in a pecuilar way and I find it fascinating. I can't wait to see what happens once it's time to record leads!

There is a lot left to do on the record. We plan to track at least 4 more songs. Then it will be time for vocals, keys and guitar overdubs. I'll keep you posted. Feel free to see what's going on over the pledge site for updates, photos and coming soon... video and audio clips!
